The introduction of an Anti-Slavery Commissioner signifies a major advancement in Australia’s ongoing efforts to combat modern slavery.⁠ ⁠ The Modern Slavery Amendment (Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner) Bill 2023 would amend the Modern Slavery Act 2018 to establish the Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner as an independent statutory office holder in the Attorney-General’s portfolio.⁠ ⁠ The Commissioner’s functions would allow the Commissioner to work with government, business, and civil society to support compliance with the Modern Slavery Act 2018 and complement the roles performed by the Attorney-General’s Department and other government agencies to prevent and combat modern slavery.⁠ ⁠ However, we believe the Anti-Slavery Commissioner's role needs to be strengthened.⁠ ⁠ Please email your MP and Senators to ask them to support strengthening the role of the Anti-Slavery Commissioner, making sure they’re fully equipped to prevent and address modern slavery. We're all aware that text message scams exist. But did you know that these scams commonly trap people in modern slavery?⁠ ⁠ Posting as legitimate companies, these centres offer jobs that seem too good to be true: good salaries, modern accommodation and generous perks. These can sound perfect for young professionals looking to start a career. However, sooner or later, they realise they're trapped.⁠ ⁠ Threatened and unable to leave, they are forced to be a part of these scams. Striking up relationships on messaging apps, they must convince people to invest in false cryptocurrency investments.⁠ ⁠ One survivor shared, "I was forced to work in a scamming compound in Sihanoukville, Cambodia and was sold four times for as much as $10,000 to different companies that operated within the compound. Australia is on the cusp of introducing an Anti-Slavery Commissioner!⁠ ⁠ We extend our sincere gratitude to Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus, KC, MP and the Australian Government for their steadfast commitment to crafting the bill that introduces the role of the Anti-Slavery Commissioner in Australia.⁠ ⁠ We also acknowledge that the Coalition Government instigated Australia’s Modern Slavery Act.
