OUR IMPACT

OUR STORY

Founded in 2007 during the bicentenary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade, we began as STOP THE TRAFFIK Australia, a one-year collaboration between the Salvation Army and World Vision.

What we discovered changed everything: there are more people enslaved today than during 400 years of the transatlantic slave trade.

We started small—raising awareness through chocolate campaigns, hosting fondue parties, and urging brands to clean up their supply chains. Over time, we evolved from “name and shame” to “name and fame”, partnering with businesses to create solutions and celebrate progress.

Today, Be Slavery Free leads global initiatives like the Chocolate Scorecard, advocates for stronger laws, and works with industry to prevent slavery in supply chains.

“No single person, organisation, or strategy can end modern slavery - it must be done together.”

— Fuzz & Carolyn Kitto

Ending slavery is about rethinking the entire system.

OUR MISSION & APPROACH

Imagine a cliff. At the bottom, an ambulance waits to pick up those who have fallen—this is the rescue and rehabilitation work that happens after someone has been exploited. It’s vital, but it’s always too late for those already harmed.

Now picture a fence at the top of the cliff. This is prevention—education, advocacy, and sustainable business practices that stop people from falling in the first place. It’s a stronger approach, but it still leaves the cliff and the danger in place.

The ultimate solution? Build a new road that never goes near the edge. That’s systemic change—redesigning supply chains, challenging exploitative economic systems, and embedding fairness and equality into the foundations of society. Because the best way to end slavery is to make it impossible from the start.

Meet the Team

Be Slavery Free is a coalition movement working to end modern slavery through prevention and systemic change. We unite businesses, governments, civil society, academics, workers, and communities because ending slavery cannot be done by one organisation alone—it must be done together.
