Hi there! Welcome!

We hope that this space will be a great resource for you in the classroom!

Creating Understanding.

Chocolate

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world.

Build it.

For Senior Students, the Hall of Records on the website In Plain Sight contains a selection of PDF reports, interactive websites, video clips, testimonies and infographics.

Designed to provide students with the essential information regarding child labour and trafficking into both Ghana and Côte dʼIvore for cocoa farming, and human trafficking and labour exploitation in the fashion industry.

We have organised these resources in a way that encourages students to take the time to consider each of the resources and determine those which are most applicable to their assessment brief.

Take Action

You can share and help others understand the dangers of modern slavery, and what to keep an eye out for.
Check out some of the things you can share on social media, above.

Campaigns

Make it stand out.

  • Tea

Tea workers in Assam receive as little as AU$2.80 per day. This is not enough to meet their basic needs.

  • Seafood

The international fishing industry is rife with exploitation and abuses against workers. Many people find themselves stuck in situations of modern slavery due to poverty, desperation, and even hope.

  • Cotton

Forced labour, child labour (including worst forms) and state-enforced forced labour is not unknown in cotton. In fact, of the top ten cotton producing countries in the world (including the US), only Australia has a clean record for its cotton.

  • Chocolate

Chocolate is a multi-billion dollar industry, and yet for every 100 grams of chocolate sold, cocoa farmers in West Africa receive around 19 cents. Many cocoa farmers and their families live in extreme poverty, making them vulnerable to exploitation and forced labour.

Modern slavery is the fastest growing illegal trade in the world and second biggest. Conservative estimates indicate that slavery affects over 40 million people, more than at any other point in human history. In November 2018, the Australian Parliament passed the Australian Modern Slavery Act. It has made us a world leader in fighting this hideous crime. We are connected most with it, through the things that we buy and the services we use.

Be Slavery Free Australia has been working in this area with partners for over 12 years and is a coalition of organisations working together to prevent, disrupt and end slavery. The ways we best achieve this is by becoming informed, educated and motivated.

These sessions help people not only understand what is happening – but also to know our part in how we can be involved in stopping and further preventing it.
